MESSAGE FROM THE
PRESIDENT
The
Benefits of Non-Virtual Networking
A day rarely
goes by without a news report or story about how the virtual electronic
world has replaced the face-to-face human one. Whether it is the
obsolescence of cover letters and paper resumes (and BTW according to
one recruiter, having an email account through AOL now presents a bad
image), or the importance of having a Facebook page and having the
required growing crowd of “references” on LinkedIn, we are told that
Napoleon has left the brick and mortar fortress and is now in ethernet
exile in Elba. The channels of human discourse and interaction are now
broadcasting in digital.
Not to cry the call of the Luddite, I do realize that many new
relationships now get started electronically and old ones get renewed. I
do believe, however, that we continue to receive deeper and more lasting
benefits from colleagues and business associates via the warmer
person-to-person interaction. And that we limit ourselves by
over-relying on the medium cool of invisible bandwidth.
We need networks and associations that meet on the playing field of the
face-to-face. Blogs, email threads, webinars and virtual meetings are
not sufficient. It’s like receiving only electronic channels while no
longer having the capability of receiving a direct human signal.
Over the last five years, The Pacific Northwest HR Strategic Forum (PNW-HRSF)
has been one of these consistent opportunities for exchange. We are a
very special collection of HR colleagues who share a set of common and
collective interests, learning objectives and what creates the ties that
bind: integrity, respect and trust. The PNW-HRSF’s leadership team
continues to work very hard to ensure that each of our individual
members and sponsor and partner companies and organizations receive a
consistently high return on investment from attending and participating
in these in-person programs and events.
We are serious about delivering on our mission: “To provide strategic
level continuous development for HR professionals and other
business/non-profit general managers in the areas of optimizing
organizational and human performance; and, to provide networking
opportunities to meet with and share knowledge in a safe, collaborative
environment.” We will continue to import a variety of thinkers,
strategists, pragmatists, implementers and even a few researchers! PNW-HRSF
has sponsored both the well-known and world-class as well as the
soon-to-be well-known. We will also continue to bring together those
that can help us strengthen our own “implementable impact” and add to
our tool kit of capabilities.
Membership provides valuable programming on timely topics to help you
and your organization make ready for tomorrow while continuing to face
the challenges of today. We are asking each of you to support the
affiliate with your renewed membership (whether individual or
company/organization), participation and viral advocacy. By doing this
you will play an important role in keeping us relevant and vital.

Built for Agility: Leading
in Uncertain Times
|
When:
Where:

Thursday, November 12, 2009
Meydenbauer Center
11100 NE 6th Street
Bellevue, WA
In the face of increasing market and economic uncertainties, the need
for strategic and organizational agility seems obvious. But when it
comes to organization change, the goal of most organizations is to
adapt...it is not to become adaptable. Making one successful change is
not the same as being agile. The purpose of this working session is to
learn about the "built to change" model of agility, apply some of the
research-based tools developed by USC's Center for Effective
Organizations, and discuss the role of HR in supporting agile
organizations.
The conference facilitators -- Ed Lawler, Chris Worley, and Theresa
Welbourne -- are noted researchers and consultants from the Center for
Effective Organizations at USC's Marshall School of Business.
This is an all-day conference. Please mark your calendar -- additional
registration details will be provided as the date approaches.
