Cultural Intelligence:
Understanding the Multigenerational Workforce with guest speaker, Dr.
Jennifer James, Urban Cultural Anthropologist and professor at the UW
Medical School
One of the most difficult aspects of change management,
especially when it’s accompanied by complex technology and increasing data
sources, is cultural adaptation. There is always a time lag between
technological innovation, economic adjustment to a new technology (knowledge
workers), demographic shifts (a more diverse workforce) and cultural belief
systems about management and co-workers. The belief and problem solving systems
of the Net Generation (5-25 year olds) are significantly different from those of
previous generations.
Managing change and an increasingly diverse workforce
requires a new story that is easily understood and linked to deeply held values
and beliefs. Successful cultural adaptation is now an essential part of human
resource management and requires leaders to assume new roles and develop new
skills.
This seminar will provide a better understanding of the
cultural adaptation process that follows technological, economic, and
demographic change. Participants will learn to notice new patterns in all
aspects of business and culture and will increase their ability to evaluate and
solve the problems confronting a multi-generational workforce with particular
attention to the Net generation.
